Dust mites, pet dander, pollen and mould are common triggers for allergies and asthma. Regular, targeted cleaning can cut them down considerably.

Bedrooms first

  • Wash bedding weekly at 60°C to kill dust mites.
  • Vacuum mattresses regularly, or book a mattress cleaning service.
  • Keep soft toys and cushions on beds to a minimum.

Dust properly

Use a damp microfibre cloth rather than a dry duster, which just moves dust around. Work from top to bottom and vacuum last, ideally with a HEPA-filter vacuum.

Control damp and mould

  • Open windows or use extractor fans when cooking and showering.
  • Wipe condensation from windows in the morning.
  • Treat black spots on sealant and grout early, before they spread.

Kitchen hygiene

Clean worktops and chopping boards after use, and clean the fridge every few weeks. A fridge and freezer clean deals with spills and odours that are easy to miss.

Keep it up

A consistent routine matters more than an occasional blitz. Regular home cleaning keeps allergens under control week in, week out.
