They say dogs are a man’s best friend.. This is great, but these best friends haven’t learnt how to wipe their paws on the mat! Pets are great to have, they provide companionship, security, loyalty and let’s not forget how cute they are! They are however unaware of the mess they cause. Here’s a few hints and tips for keeping your house in tip top condition while you’ve got pets around;

Pet beds, toys and even leads pick up that strong dog odour and all need to be cleaned regularly. Check if they are machine washable, otherwise you can wash by hand in the sink. Save this chore for a sunny day and allow them to dry outside where the sun will help kill bad odours.

Getting rid of hair around the home can be easier than you think… Use a lint roller, these work on a lot more than just clothes. You can use these on most upholstery after vacuuming, they are particularly good for dog/cat beds.

Finding it hard to get rid of the smells of your pesky pets? Now that spring is here open your windows and let some fresh air in. Even on cold days, a 10 minute blast of fresh air works wonders at deodorising.

Do your pets tend to end up with more food on the floor than in their mouths? Don’t spend time scrubbing the floor – a wipe clean mat will make the job much easier. Place one under their food area to keep everything nice and tidy.

Look for a pet appropriate vacuum cleaner to pick up pesky hairs and help banish odours. You’ll need an extra strong suction, quality filter and a good brush action to pull hair out rather than glide over the surface. Consider the type of flooring you have in your home and if your pet goes on the furniture, look for one which can tackle upholstery too. If you’ve got yourself a shedder, you’ll need to vacuum daily to keep on top of things. Be sure to regularly clean out the filter too as a hair and dirt clogged filter will spread the smell of pet hair wherever you vacuum.

Lavender essential oils are said to soothe dogs and also help keep fleas and ticks at bay. Just apply regularly between their shoulder blades. Additionally, it’s great for on the go. Mix 10 drops with some water in a small spray bottle and pop into your car. It’ll keep your dog calm on long journeys and your car smelling fresh.
